White Post Lane

Hackney Wick

Rock Townsend received planning consent for this new building in the Fish Island quarter of Hackney Wick on the site of the former Lea Tavern. The proposed five storey development underwent extensive reviews with Thames Gateway Development Corporation, The London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Design for London.  The result is an exciting new building in a relatively underdeveloped area, currently designated for ‘Strategic Light Industrial’ use.

The building responds to the site context through a contemporary interpretation of the adjacent warehouse vernacular.  A restaurant occupies the ground floor & mezzanine levels, with four storeys of double height open floors above – each with a mezzanine level. The industrial aesthetic combines exposed concrete soffits, natural ventilation chimneys, sedum roof, rainwater recycling, solar panels to make a highly sustainable building.  These factors, together with 20% on-site renewables meet the requirements of the London Plan.
