The Photographic Studio, Harrow Campus, University of Westminster
Rock Townsend has created a new printing and design studio for the Photography Department at the University of Westminster's Harrow Campus. Collaborating closely with the department, our team crafted a design that meets the complex functional requirements of the space while incorporating aesthetics and lighting ideal for printing and editing.
The studio features a large central table for teaching and collaboration, with an overhead lightbox that provides the necessary lighting for analysing prints and illuminating the space. Curtains allow the main area to be subdivided into smaller workspaces, giving full control over lighting levels for editing and reviewing photos.
The design is mainly neutral, utilising '18% grey' - the standard mid-tone grey used in photography for exposure reference. A contrasting pop of yellow highlights an area of soft seating, providing students an obvious space to take a break from work and relax, resulting in a functional and welcoming studio that supports both technical work and creative projects.
